Founded in 1898, Duckworth is an independent publisher with a general trade and academic list.

Duckworth General publishes literary and commercial fiction and non-fiction, including history, biography and memoir. Authors include John Bayley, Beryl Bainbridge, Robert Littell, Joan Bakewell, J J Connolly, Mary Warnock, William Vollmann and Helmut Newton. Recently, it has enjoyed success with Clive Woodall’s One for Sorrow and J J Connolly’s Layer Cake, which reached number one and two respectively on the independent publisher bestseller list.

Duckworth Academic features important new scholarly monographs and series in Archaeology, Classics, Ancient History and Ancient Philosophy. Its extensive backlist of both Duckworth and Bristol Classical Press titles includes school and student texts in Latin, Greek, Russian, French, German and Spanish language and literature.

Duckworth also has a list of Russian literature in translation published under the Ardis imprint.

Duckworth is associated with the Overlook Press in New York.
