Blog - Duckworth to Tell Poisoner's Tale

Duckworth has acquired the story of the Victorian serial poisoner Dr William Palmer, described by Charles Dickens as 'the greatest villain who ever stood trial at the Old Bailey.'

Jon Jackson bought world English language rights to The Poisoner by Stephen Bates through Charlie Viney at the Viney Agency, which tells the story of Palmer who poisoned a string of victims for their money in what Viney describes as 'the most sensational criminal case of the Victorian era.'

Bates is a former Guardian journalist, and the book is the first major retelling of this story for 60 years, questioning whether the trial involved a miscarriage of justice.

Overlook Press will publish the book in the US, with sales through Bloomsbury UK and Penguin internationally.
