About Sybil Marshall

Sybil Marshall (1913-2005) was a British writer, teacher and educationalist. Having grown up a ‘fen tiger’ in one of the lowest and most isolated of the Black Fens in rural Huntingdonshire, she was raised in a tradition of story-telling. Her folk tales are imbued with myth and magic but also bring to life the lives of those who told them, spinning a ‘thin but tough thread’ through history. The stories she has collected are part social history and part archaeology, and overflow with the delight Marshall takes in telling them. Working first as a teacher and then as a university lecturer, she later became an author and her books include Fenland Chronicle and the trilogy of novels A Nest of Magpies, Sharp Through The Hawthorn and Strip The Willow
